Every great scientific truth goes through three phases: first, people deny it. Second, they say it conflicts with the Bible. Third, they say they’ve known it all along.

Awesome! And so true. When a scientific discovery can no longer be denied then it’s made to harmonize in whatever way possible.

I read this as I walk in to lunch with a friend to teach me about ‘Evolutionary Theism’. This must be Gods perfect timing.

I used to think that theistic evolution was a handshake with the devil. Now I realize that accepting Genesis as divinely received (in any way) is the handshake. I have to tell believing friends now that I reject Genesis because, quite honestly, it is a blasphemous fraud. People aren’t used to hearing that the Bible is the blasphemous part of any conversation. 🙂

UPDATE: The ribs at Smokey D’s are great. And my friend used the guile of an evolotionary theism book as cover so his wife wouldn’t know he was planning to confess to me he’s almost totally deconverted. Glad I bought his lunch now.

Wow, that’s pretty amazing. I think I mentioned before: you may be surprised at what people aren’t too far off from your landing place, but who haven’t said anything. 🙂

BTW I think ET is pretty much in the category of ‘we knew this all along’.

Great play on the words regarding a quote attributed to Arthur Schopenhauer:
“Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognized:
In the first it is ridiculed, in the second it is opposed, in the third it is regarded as self-evident.”
Love Tyson’s version the best.

I watched a great NDT lecture the other day where he tracks the history of great scientific discoveries noting that many of the greatest were made by Christians. He says that is fascinating, then he asks a question. In a survey of the NAS 85% responded agnostic/atheist and 15% theist, but the question is why do 15% of the brightest minds in the country believe in God?
Cricket. . . cricket. . .
I don’t think it’s science versus bible at all, in fact, I think it’s more about dogmatism versus open-mindedness or maybe even fear-of-change versus embraces-strong-evidence.

Why do 99.98% of the dimmest minds in America believe in god?

NDT would say you missed the point.
